History Of London

London is the capital of England and the United Kingdom with a recorded history that goes back over 2,000 years. It is the UK's largest city and the biggest urban zone in the European Union. Todat it is is one of the largest financial and cultural capitals of the world.

It has been a major settlement for two millennia. The history of London goes back to its founding by the Romans, who called it Londinium. Londinium was established about seven years after the invasion of AD 43. From the 6th century, Anglo-Saxons began to inhabit the area. The Norman invasion of Britain in 1066 is usually considered to be the beginning of the Medieval period. The Tudor period from 1485 until 1603 was a dramatic period of English history. Three of the monarchs of the Tudor dynasty (Henry VII, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I) played important roles in transforming England from a comparatively weak European backwater into a powerful state that in the coming centuries would dominate much of the world.

Today, London is a leading global city being one of the world's largest financial centres and has the largest city GDP in Europe. London has a diverse range of peoples, cultures and religions, and more than 300 languages are spoken within its boundaries. London's influence in politics, finance, education, entertainment, media, fashion, the arts and culture in general contributes to its global position.
